c 1078 Work begins on building the White Tower by London

c 1097 William Rufus builds a stone wall around the tower

1100 The White Tower is completed. It stands 90 feet high.

1101 The Bishop of Durham escapes from the Tower of London

1190-1210 Bell Tower is built

1190-1199 Wardrobe Tower is built

c 1220 Henry III begins building the Wakefield Tower and the Lanthorn Tower

1238 Henry III begins building a new curtain wall

1255 Henry III builds an elephant house for his elephant

1272-1308 Edward I reigns. He builds the Beauchamp Tower and St Thomas's Gate. He also builds an extra curtain wall around the existing curtain wall.

1381 During the Peasants Revolt some rebels enter the Tower of London

1471 King Edward VI is murdered in the Tower of London

1485 The Yeoman Warders are founded

1535 Bishop Fisher and Thomas More are beheaded in the Tower of London

1536 Anne Boleyn is beheaded in the Tower of London

1542 Catherine Howard is beheaded in the Tower of London

1554 Lady Jane Grey is beheaded in the Tower of London

1603 Walter Raleigh is sent to the Tower of London

1618 Walter Raleigh is beheaded in the Tower of London

1671 Colonel Thomas Blood attempts to steal the crown jewels from the Tower of London

1685 The Royal Fusiliers are formed to guard the weapons in the Tower of London

1747 Lord Lovat is the last person to be beheaded in the Tower of London

1835 The menagerie (zoo) in the Tower of London is moved to Regents Park

1843 The moat around the Tower is drained

First World War Eleven German spies are shot in the Tower of London

1941 A German spy called Josef Jakobs is executed in the Tower of London
